Revenue Management
Transient vs Group
Individual bookings versus contracted blocks — the central trade-off in displacement decisions.
Academic definition
Transient and group are the two broad categories of hotel demand. Transient demand comprises individual bookings — leisure and corporate guests booking on their own account through direct, OTA, or other channels — typically at prevailing dynamic rates and with shorter lead times. Group demand comprises blocks of rooms contracted together, such as conferences, weddings, and corporate events, usually negotiated in advance at agreed rates and often accompanied by food, beverage, and function-space revenue. The two behave differently: transient rates flex with demand, while group rates are fixed at contracting; group carries wash and attrition risk, while transient carries cancellation and no-show risk. The central tension is displacement — whether to accept a group block that consumes inventory which could otherwise be sold to higher-rated transient demand. Resolving it requires comparing the total value of each, traditionally on a revenue basis across rooms and ancillary spend.
Worked example
A hotel weighs a 40-room conference block at ₹3,500 against holding the rooms for ₹4,500 transient; once near-zero group acquisition cost and ₹6,00,000 of banquet revenue are counted, the group retains more profit.
The ProfitPAR™ lens
The transient-versus-group choice is usually fought on rate — group locks in a lower rate, transient might pay more later — but rate is the wrong battlefield. The honest comparison is profit, fully loaded. Group rooms often arrive with low acquisition cost and meaningful ancillary spend on F&B and function space; transient rooms might carry a higher rate but a heavy commission. ProfitPAR™ reframes the decision around retained profit per available room across the whole stay, ancillary included: a lower-rated group can out-retain higher-rated transient once the leaks and the function revenue are counted. Decide on what each leaves behind, not on which line shows the bigger headline rate.
A lower-rated group can keep more than higher-rated transient once commission and ancillary spend are counted.
Measure what each room actually keeps.
