Revenue Management
GLV — Guest Lifetime Value
The total net profit a guest delivers across the whole relationship — reframing acquisition cost as investment.
Academic definition
Guest Lifetime Value (GLV) estimates the total value a guest generates across the entire duration of their relationship with a hotel or brand, rather than from a single stay. A profit-based formulation multiplies the average profit per stay by the number of stays per year and the number of years the guest is retained, yielding the cumulative contribution expected over the relationship. GLV reframes guest acquisition and retention as investments measured against long-term return rather than single-transaction cost, informing how much a hotel can justifiably spend to acquire or retain a guest, and which segments and channels produce the most valuable long-term relationships. It connects revenue management with marketing and loyalty strategy. Calculating GLV requires assumptions about retention, stay frequency, and per-stay profitability, so it is an estimate; its value lies in shifting decisions from a transactional to a relationship horizon.
Average Profit per Stay = retained profit per stay · Stays per Year = visit frequency · Retained Years = length of the relationship
Worked example
A guest delivering ₹3,000 average profit per stay, twice a year, retained five years, is worth GLV ≈ ₹3,000 × 2 × 5 = ₹30,000 — context that turns a modest acquisition cost into a sound investment.
The ProfitPAR™ lens
GLV is the metric that finally puts acquisition cost in its proper frame — as an investment, not an expense. A booking that looks marginal on a single-stay basis can be richly profitable once you count the repeat stays it begins. But notice the formula: it multiplies profit per stay, not revenue per stay. A guest acquired direct, served well, and retained for years compounds margin; a guest won once through a discounted OTA booking and never seen again is an expense that never amortises. ProfitPAR™ and GLV pull in the same direction across time — ProfitPAR™ maximises the profit of each stay, GLV multiplies it across the relationship. The most valuable guest is the profitable one you keep.
A profitable guest you keep for years is worth more than a discounted one you win once.
