Conversion Rate

The efficiency of turning direct website traffic into bookings.

Academic definition

Conversion rate is the proportion of website sessions or visits that result in a completed booking, calculated by dividing bookings by sessions and expressing the result as a percentage. In hotel distribution it most often refers to the performance of a hotel's direct booking website, where it measures how effectively traffic is turned into reservations. Conversion is influenced by website design and speed, the booking engine experience, rate competitiveness, content and imagery, trust signals, and the relevance of the traffic driven to the site. It is a central metric in direct-channel strategy, because the value of marketing that drives traffic depends on how much of that traffic converts. Conversion rate is read alongside traffic volume and the cost of acquiring it, since improving conversion raises bookings without increasing traffic spend. It measures booking efficiency on a channel rather than the rate or profitability of the resulting bookings.

Conversion Rate = Bookings ÷ Website Sessions × 100

Bookings = completed reservations · Website Sessions = visits to the direct site

Worked example

100 bookings from 5,000 sessions gives a conversion rate of 2%; lifting it to 3% adds 50 commission-free direct bookings from the same traffic the hotel already paid to attract.

The ProfitPAR™ lens

Conversion rate is where direct-channel profit is quietly made or lost. Every percentage point of improvement on the direct website produces bookings with no commission attached, from traffic the hotel has already paid to attract — the cheapest profit growth available. A hotel pouring spend into driving traffic to a site that converts poorly is funding the OTA, because the demand it fails to convert directly often completes the booking through the commissioned channel instead. ProfitPAR™ treats direct conversion as a high-leverage profit input: lift it and the direct booking ratio rises, the commission leak shrinks, and retained profit per room climbs with no extra rate or traffic. Conversion is not a marketing metric here; it is a profit-retention metric.

Every point of direct conversion is profit won from traffic you already paid for.
