Rate Parity
Maintaining consistent room rates across distribution channels.
Academic definition
Rate parity is the practice, often contractually required by online travel agencies, of maintaining consistent room rates for the same product across distribution channels. Under a parity agreement, a hotel cannot publicly offer a lower rate on its own website or another channel than it offers on the OTA. Proponents argue parity protects consumer trust and channel relationships by preventing rate undercutting; critics argue it limits a hotel's ability to reward direct bookings and entrenches OTA market power. The strength and legality of parity clauses vary by jurisdiction, and several markets have restricted or banned wide parity provisions, allowing hotels more freedom to differentiate direct pricing. Hotels work within parity constraints using member-only rates, closed user groups, bundled value, and non-rate incentives that fall outside the scope of public-rate parity. Parity governs the displayed rate, not the net amount a hotel retains after channel costs.
Worked example
Bound by parity, a hotel lists ₹4,500 on its site and the OTA alike; it then launches a members-only rate of ₹4,200 inside a login wall — outside parity's scope — to pull bookings into the channel that keeps the commission.
The ProfitPAR™ lens
Rate parity is the clause that quietly guarantees the OTA's margin at the hotel's expense. By forcing the direct rate to match the OTA rate, it strips away the one lever an owner has to reward the channel that costs nothing: price. If you cannot be cheaper direct, why would a guest book direct? Parity is how a hotel ends up paying commission to sell at a price it could have sold for free. ProfitPAR™ treats escaping parity's grip — through member rates, bundles, and closed user groups that parity does not cover — as one of the highest-leverage profit moves available, because every booking pulled out of the commissioned channel keeps its full rate.
If you cannot price your direct channel cheaper, you are paying commission to sell at a rate you already owned.
