OTA — Online Travel Agency

Third-party booking platforms that sell rooms in exchange for commission.

Academic definition

An Online Travel Agency (OTA) is a third-party platform that markets and sells hotel rooms to consumers, earning a commission on each booking it generates. Major OTAs operate large-scale marketing, search, and booking infrastructure, giving hotels access to broad demand, including international and first-time guests, without building equivalent reach themselves. OTAs operate under two principal models: the merchant model, where the OTA collects payment and remits the hotel its net rate, and the agency model, where the hotel collects payment and pays commission after the stay. Commission rates typically range from fifteen to twenty-five percent. OTAs influence rate parity terms and search visibility, and their prominence in the booking funnel gives them significant market power. They are a core distribution channel, valuable for the incremental demand they reach but costly relative to direct channels because of the commission paid on every room they sell.

Worked example

A guest who already knows the hotel books through an OTA out of habit; the property pays ₹810 commission on a ₹4,500 room to sell a guest it could have captured direct for almost nothing.

The ProfitPAR™ lens

The OTA is not a villain — it is an expensive sales force you rent by the booking, and the question is never whether to use it but which bookings are worth renting. The danger is dependence: a hotel that lets the OTA sell guests it could have reached directly is paying fifteen to twenty-five percent to rent back its own demand. Each OTA room arrives pre-leaked, the largest of the six leaks already deducted before the guest checks in. ProfitPAR™ treats the OTA as a channel to be managed to a target, not maximised — valuable for genuinely incremental demand, costly when it captures guests who would have come anyway. The goal is to use it for reach and starve it of bookings you already own.

Pay the OTA for guests you could never reach, never for guests you already own.

Measure what each room actually keeps.
