USALI — Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry
The standardised hotel accounting framework that defines departmental reporting and underpins GOPPAR.
Academic definition
The Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry (USALI) is the standardised accounting framework that defines how hotels structure and report financial results. First published for the hotel industry and periodically revised, it prescribes consistent departmental reporting — separating operated departments such as rooms and food and beverage from undistributed operating expenses and fixed charges — so that performance can be compared reliably across properties, brands, and time. USALI defines key reporting lines including departmental profit, gross operating profit, and earnings before fixed charges, and underpins metrics such as GOPPAR that derive from them. Its standardisation enables owners, operators, lenders, and benchmarking services to interpret hotel financials on a common basis. USALI governs how revenue and cost are classified and presented in period financial statements; it is an accounting and reporting standard rather than a real-time operational or decision-making tool, and reflects results after the accounting period closes.
Worked example
A hotel's USALI-structured month-end statement cleanly separates rooms and F&B departmental profit from fixed charges, enabling clean GOPPAR comparison — but only after the period has closed and the decisions are already made.
The ProfitPAR™ lens
USALI is the grammar of hotel accounting, and its standardisation is genuinely valuable — without it, no two hotels could compare results honestly. But it is a period-close reporting framework, built to tell you what happened after the month is shut, organised by department rather than by the room as a unit of profit. GOPPAR inherits exactly those limits. ProfitPAR™ does not reject USALI; it sits in front of it, computing retained profit per available room in real time, at the point of decision, in a structure built for action rather than reporting. USALI tells the owner what the rooms kept last month; ProfitPAR™ tells the system what the next room will keep, while there is still time to change it.
USALI tells you what the rooms kept last month; profit decisions happen before the month closes.
Measure what each room actually keeps.
