Billboard Effect

OTA visibility driving incremental direct bookings a hotel would not otherwise have won.

Academic definition

The billboard effect describes the phenomenon whereby a hotel's presence on a large online travel agency generates direct bookings it would not otherwise have received, as travellers discover the hotel on the OTA and then book directly through its own website. The OTA functions like a billboard, providing visibility and exposure to demand the hotel could not reach alone, with some of that exposure converting outside the commissioned channel. The effect is cited in debates over the true cost of OTA distribution: if a meaningful share of OTA-driven awareness converts to direct bookings, the effective cost of OTA presence is lower than headline commission suggests. The strength of the effect is debated and varies by hotel, brand strength, and market, and is difficult to measure precisely because it requires attributing direct bookings to prior OTA exposure. It represents a potential offsetting benefit to OTA distribution cost.

Worked example

A traveller discovers a hotel while browsing an OTA, then books on the hotel's own site at the same rate — a commission-free booking the OTA's visibility genuinely created, the billboard effect working as intended.

The ProfitPAR™ lens

The billboard effect is the strongest honest argument for OTA presence — and exactly the kind of claim that deserves measurement rather than faith. Yes, OTA visibility can send guests who then book direct, and that conversion is genuinely valuable: reach paid for once, a booking kept commission-free. But the effect is routinely invoked to justify OTA dependence that produces no such spillover. ProfitPAR™ treats the billboard effect as a hypothesis to be tested in retained-profit terms, not an article of belief: measure the incremental direct bookings the OTA presence actually drives, and weigh them against the commission paid on the bookings it captured. Where the effect is real, it lowers effective channel cost; where it is assumed, it hides leakage.

The billboard effect is real only when you can prove the direct bookings it claims to create.
