Revenue Management

Channel Mix

The distribution of bookings across channels — ranked, in profit terms, by what each retains.

Academic definition

Channel mix is the distribution of a hotel's bookings across the channels through which they arrive — direct website and voice, online travel agencies, the global distribution system, wholesalers, and others. Each channel carries a different cost of acquisition, principally commission and transaction fees, and reaches different demand. Managing channel mix means influencing the proportion of bookings flowing through each channel to balance reach against cost, typically through pricing, availability controls, loyalty incentives, and direct-booking strategy. Because the cost of distribution varies sharply by channel, two hotels with identical revenue but different channel mixes retain different amounts. Channel mix is a central concern of modern revenue management as distribution costs have grown, and it connects pricing, marketing, and distribution strategy. Traditionally optimised toward revenue and reach, channel mix is most consequential when evaluated by the profit each channel retains rather than the volume it delivers.

Worked example

Two 50-room hotels run identical RevPAR; the one booking 60% direct rather than 25% keeps roughly ₹900 more profit per available room purely from a healthier channel mix.

The ProfitPAR™ lens

Channel mix is the lever that decides how much of your revenue you actually keep, and it is the highest-leverage input to ProfitPAR™. Two hotels can post identical RevPAR; the one with more direct business banks meaningfully more profit, full stop. Yet most hotels manage channel mix by volume — celebrating total bookings without asking what share arrived through the leak. The whole point is to rank channels by retained profit per room, not by rooms delivered, then shift the mix deliberately toward the channels that keep the most. ProfitPAR™ makes that ranking explicit, turning channel mix from a reporting category into the primary dial an owner turns to grow profit without selling a single extra room.

Same revenue, different channel mix, very different profit — it is the dial that matters most.

Measure what each room actually keeps.
