Revenue Management
CRS — Central Reservation System
The system holding rates and inventory and pushing them out to every channel.
Academic definition
A Central Reservation System (CRS) is the core technology that stores a hotel's rates, availability, and inventory and distributes them across connected channels — the brand website and booking engine, online travel agencies, the global distribution system, and the voice reservation centre. Acting as the single source of truth for what is for sale and at what price, the CRS receives bookings from all channels and passes them to the property management system, while pushing rate and availability updates outward, often through a channel manager. Centralising distribution this way keeps pricing and inventory consistent across channels, supports rate parity, and enables coordinated revenue-management decisions to take effect everywhere at once. The CRS is foundational infrastructure for multi-channel distribution; its accuracy and connectivity determine how reliably a hotel's pricing and availability strategy is executed across the markets where its rooms are sold.
Worked example
A hotel reconfigures its CRS to release its lowest rate bucket only to the direct channel while holding it back from OTAs, steering price-sensitive demand into the channel that keeps the full rate.
The ProfitPAR™ lens
The CRS is the control room, and whoever sets its rules decides how profit is distributed across channels. Most hotels run it neutrally — same rates, same availability, pushed everywhere equally — which quietly means pushing business toward whichever channel the guest happens to pick, including the most expensive one. That is a missed lever. ProfitPAR™ views the CRS as where channel-mix strategy becomes real: rate and availability rules that favour direct and high-margin channels, executed automatically across every connection. A CRS configured for profit does not just keep rates consistent; it steers demand toward the channels that keep the most. The infrastructure already exists in most hotels; what is usually missing is a profit objective driving it.
